Watch the iPhone X TrueDepth Camera Used to Animate 3D characters
Apple's Software
November 16, 2017
You can now animate 3D characters just by using your iPhone as a recently posted video shows. In the tech demo, VFX artist Elisha Hung uses the Apple iPhone X’s TrueDepth camera to animate 3D characters and objects.
The demo was coded using an Apple ARKit app to record a live-updating face mesh. From there, a depth map was used to animate a 2D texture.
In iOS 11, developers can access the same face mesh technology Apple uses for its Animoji feature in the Messages app. From there, 3D editing software can interpret data streaming from the iOS ARKit API.
You can probably expect to see other videos like this pop up in the coming months as more people purchase an iPhone X.
