Apple Announces Another App Store Record for New Year's Day
Apple is once again celebrating an App Store record. On New Year’s Day 2017, the company saw its biggest single day ever, capping a record-breaking holiday season, according to a new press release.
On Jan. 1, the App Store saw purchases totaling $240 million. For all of December, the company saw App Store sales topping $3 billion. In all of 2016, developers earned over $20 billion, or a 40 percent increase over 2015.
According to Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of worldwide marketing:
We want to thank our entire developer community for the many innovative apps they have created — which together with our products — help to truly enrich people’s lives.
Apple said that Nintendo’s Super Mario Run saw 40 million downloads during the first four days of release. It was the most downloaded app globally on both Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.
Pokémon Go was the most downloaded app of 2016. Prisma, Reigns, Procreate, Lumino City, Sweat With Kayla, and djay Pro, all from independent developers, were also cited for being among the most successful apps of the year.
As of today, Jan. 5, the App Store offers 2.2 million apps in total, up over 20 percent from last year.
On Jan. 1, 2016, Apple reported a then-record $144 million in App Store sales. During the 2015 holiday season, the company reported total App Store sales of over $1.1 billion.
