Ahead of WWDC, Apple Announces Huge App Store Sales, Commissions

June 1, 2017

With the start of this year’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) just days away, Apple has announced some big App Store sales numbers.

The company says it has now handed out $70 billion in earnings to developers since the App Store first opened in 2008. Additionally, for the past 12 months, App Store downloads have increased 70 percent, while subscriptions have risen 58 percent year over year.

In today’s announcement, Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing notes:

People everywhere love apps and our customers are downloading them in record numbers. Seventy billion dollars earned by developers is simply mind-blowing. We are amazed at all of the great new apps our developers create and can’t wait to see them again next week at our Worldwide Developers Conference.

The App Store is now available in 155 countries, with Gaming and Entertainment its top-grossing categories.

Among the “breakout” App Store titles cited by Apple are Pokémon GO, Super Mario Run, and SPACE by THIX.

This year’s WWDC begins next Monday, June 5 and runs through Friday, June 9. The annual keynote address begins on Monday at 10 a.m. PDT.
