According to a Thursday report, Taiwan’s Ministry of Science and Technology has approved PlayNitride’s application to set up a US$17 million production facility at Hsinchu Science Park. At the facility, the company hopes to manufacture micro-LEDs, display modules, and panels.

PlayNitride isn’t the only company getting Apple’s attention with regards to MicroLEDs. It’s also working with TSMC to bring the material to upcoming mobile devices.

MicroLED is a low-power display technology that features better color gamuts and brightness levels than LCD. It’s also more battery efficient because it doesn’t require a backlight.

OLED, by contrast, the material found on the iPhone X and current-generation Apple Watch,  is a light-emitting diode containing thin flexible sheets of an organic electroluminescent material.

Apple’s move to MicroLED displays would probably occur first with the 2019 Apple Watch models with future iPhones to follow.
