Apple to Announce Apple TV App Focused on TV Show Discovery

Apple is planning to announce a new app for the Apple TV that will help viewers discover TV shows at tomorrow’s media event, according to USA Today.

The app, called “The Watch List” internally, will recommend TV shows based on the content available to them. As an example, if you subscribe to HBO, you might get a recommendation to watch Westworld, a new science fiction show from the network.

For network programmers, it provides a central hub for promoting new shows — a helpful tool at a time when old programming tricks for launching a new series, such as wedging a freshman show next to a hit program, don’t work in the digital world.

The app comes after Apple has been unable to create its own skinny bundle package, something that we’ve heard Apple was working hard to achieve. Perhaps this is the first step in getting more people interested in the fourth-generation Apple TV, which launched a year ago.

Apple’s “Hello Again” event kicks off at 10 a.m. PDT tomorrow, Thursday, Oct. 27.  A live stream will be available at Apple.com and on Apple TV.
