Apple Watch May Soon Have MicroLED Technology, not OLED

June 24, 2016

Apple may soon ditch OLED screen technology on Apple Watch. Instead, late-2017 models could use MicroLED panels, according to DigiTimes.

In the report, DigiTimes notes that the switch comes just as Apple plans on switching to OLED for the 2017 iPhone models.

MicroLED is a low-power display technology that features better color gamuts and brightness levels than LCD. It’s also more battery efficient because it doesn’t require a backlight, which could be great news for Apple Watch owners.

Most DigiTimes news is suspect, at best. However, it’s worth noting that Apple bought LuxVue Technology in 2014, which specialized in MicroLED technology.

The 2016 Apple Watch is likely to ship with the same OLED display found on the current model.
