Apple Wins Stay in App Store Case Against Epic, Won't Have to Make Changes Tomorrow

December 8, 2021

Just before tomorrow’s deadline to make substantial changes to the App Store, Apple has won a stay from the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals.

The stay doesn’t change the ruling but just delays enforcement.

In September, the judge ruled that Apple must allow U.S. developers to direct customers to other payment options besides Apple’s in-app purchase system. That will allows developers to provide another way of paying for an in-app purchase.

As you probably know, in-app purchases are mainly used in “freemium” games. The download is free, but gamers can make purchases while playing for in-game power ups and other enhancements.

Apple takes up to 30 percent of revenue from in-app purchases made through its system. With an alternative system, developers can take home more revenue.
