January 17, 2017

At long last, after what seemed like an eternity of absence, the AppsGoneFree app has made its triumphant return. It’s back with an all-new interface — no more leather, stitching, and fabric! — that makes for a more pleasant user experience. Perhaps more notably, it’s back with a new name — AppAdvice Daily — and for good reason, as you’ll find out shortly.

Now before you go up in arms about the apparent implication of the name change, we’d like to make one thing very clear: AppsGoneFree hasn’t gone away. No way.

Today’s Apps Gone Free

The service that has attracted more than 50,000 five-star reviews on the App Store and has been featured on the likes of LifeHacker, The New York Times, and USA Today is very much alive and kicking. And you can find it right within AppAdvice Daily, with the added advantage of a more streamlined layout and navigation.

In the Today’s Apps Gone Free section in AppAdvice Daily, you can readily see the carefully curated AppsGoneFree listing for the day, complete with things you need to know before you download each featured app: what it is, who it’s for, and why we picked it. Then just tap on a featured app to view more information and to download it from the App Store.

The best things in life are free, as the old adage goes. But not all apps that go free are among the best. And that’s where AppsGoneFree comes in, separating the wheat from the chaff to bring you only those that are actually worth downloading, even at no cost. And as mentioned, it’s right within AppAdvice Daily, which you’d be wise to download right now if you’re on the lookout for worthwhile apps that have just, well, gone free.

Almost two years. Believe it or not, that’s how long the AppsGoneFree app was out of the App Store. But we spent most of that period not only sorting out some issues, but also figuring out a way to make the app even better and more beneficial to users.

In the new AppAdvice Daily app, the Today’s Apps Gone Free section is actually preceded by another section. This is the Today’s App Advice section, and we’re excited to tell you all about it.

Today’s App Advice

Each day, along with the usual AppsGoneFree listing found in the Today’s Apps Gone Free section, AppAdvice Daily will feature an in-depth article that answers a reader’s question. It could be a curated collection of apps that answers a request like “Do you have a ranking of the best games of 2016?” or “I just got a new iPhone. What apps should I install first?” It could be a tips-and-tricks or how-to piece that offers solutions to a quandary like “Is there an easy way to sign documents from my email?” or “Got any suggestions on how I can reduce data usage on my iPhone?” It could even be a product guide in response to a question like “What are your favorite accessories for iOS devices?” or “What are the best accessories for losing weight?”

What’s more, every time we talk about an app in our in-depth articles, instead of the usual static screenshots, we’ll be using videos to show the app in action. We call these specially formatted looping videos “AppPlays,” and examples of them are actually included right here in this post. As you can see, AppPlays are unobtrusive, since they fit in nicely alongside the content and they automatically play and replay as you scroll past. Most importantly, they give you a clear idea of how the app in question works and whether it’s something that looks right up your alley or not.

Submit reader’s question

But do you know what the best part is? Well, it’s the fact that every reader and user can ask any app- or iOS-related question. In fact, we’re not only allowing you to send in your questions; we’re imploring you to do so. In the AppAdvice Daily app’s Today’s App Advice section, right below the featured article of the day, there’s a small banner that you can tap to access a form with which you can submit your app- or iOS-related questions to us. (You can also access the form at this link.)

After receiving your questions, we’ll tap into our nearly a decade’s worth of knowledge and do the necessary research and testing to answer them with appropriate and relevant app collections, how-tos, accessory guides, and whatnot. Essentially, we want to be your go-to resource. Think of us as your very own Dear Abby, but for anything and everything iOS.

Please check out the app and let us know what you think. How do you find the new version? Is there something you’d like to change about it? How do you like the new Today’s App Advice section? If there’s ever anything you want us to know about the app, we’d love to hear about it. Just tap the banner at the bottom of the app to access a form with which you can send us your feedback. (You can also access the form at this link.)

And if you love the app and want to help ensure its longevity, we’d really appreciate if you could rate the app and give it a new review in the App Store. For one thing, all of the app’s reviews get wiped out of immediate visibility with every new update. For another, the nearly two years the app was missing from the App Store is precious time lost in terms of how the app could have flourished, gained more users, and increased in popularity.

But it does not do well to dwell on what could have been. Rather, we’re now focusing on what should be. And we believe that AppAdvice Daily should be your favorite app not only for finding noteworthy free apps but also — true to our name — for discovering great app advice.
