Fight Brewing Over Apple's OLED 'iPhone 8' Business

Samsung and LG fighting hard
October 31, 2016

Samsung and LG are in a “do or die” fight to win OLED display orders for future iPhones, according to BusinessKorea.

According to the report, the two companies are spending upwards of $11.6 million this year on the type of flexible displays likely to show up on the “iPhone 8.”

Right now, Samsung accounts for around 95 percent of small-to-medium organic light-emitting diode (or OLED) displays on the market. These include smartphones and laptops, but not monitors and television sets.

Foxconn-owned Sharp and Applied Materials are also in the running for Apple’s OLED business.

At least one of next year’s iPhone models is expected to feature an OLED screen for the first time.
