Google Maps Now Supports Food Delivery
Just over a couple of weeks ago, Google Maps received an update that added more relevant place information, the ability to add photos to reviews, and most notably, iOS 10 widgets for nearby transit and travel times.
Now, Google has released another notable update to its popular navigation and transit app that introduces several new features and improvements including the ability to order food right within the app — the better for it to compete with Apple’s built-in Maps app on iOS.
What’s new in Google Maps
Place your order
The most notable new addition to Google Maps for iOS is integration with food delivery services such as Eat24, Seamless, and GrubHub. When viewing the card for a restaurant that offers food delivery, you can now tap an option labeled “Place an order” and then choose from the available food delivery services. Tapping a food delivery service opens the corresponding website or app (if installed), where the order placement may be completed. Note, though, that ordering from food delivery services via Google Maps has limited availability based on country.
Grab the plus code
One of the special features of Google’s mapping service is the Open Location Code or plus code, which represents locations that don’t have specific street addresses. In the new version of Google Maps, you can now easily find plus codes for sharing with family and friends. Just drop a pin anywhere on the map, open the location’s card, and then tap the plus code at the bottom, whereupon it’s automatically copied to your device’s clipboard for pasting in, say, an email or a text message.
Add photos
The latest update to Google Maps also offers streamlined taking and adding photos of places from inside the app. Just tap the “Add a photo” option or button when viewing a location’s card or reviewing it to access options for taking a new photo or choosing an existing photo to add.
The latest update to Google Maps for iOS also delivers bug fixes to improve the app’s performance and stability.
Google Maps is available on the App Store for free. It’s compatible with iPhone, iPod touch, iPad, and Apple Watch.
