Jammer Lets You Get Your Groove on as Your Own DJ

August 30, 2017

Some apps just let you find music to listen to, and you can't take much control over the tunes. Others, geared for professional DJs and samplers, are way too complicated for the amateur who just wants to get started with loops and one-offs. Jammer is different, breaking the songs down into those bite-size chunks that you can mix together and become your own DJ.

You've never tried it, but heaven knows you've wanted to. You watch the DJ in the club spin tunes, skillfully mixing loops and one-offs to come up with great riffs that get the crowd wild.

With Jammer, you can try that for yourself, right in the privacy of your own space with your iPhone and headphones. Or, if you're brave, turn up the volume and connect to a Bluetooth speaker to show everyone around what you've got.

The app makes mixing tracks easy as pie, setting loops into circles and one-offs in squares. Just tap and play, and you'll be making tunes in no time.

When you download this app, you get three tracks for free. If you get tired of those, not to fret. You can download more songs from the app's store. There's a huge selection already there, and it's growing by leaps and bounds. There are quite a few genres included, from wild party music to laid-back chill tunes.

The app that lets you play with loops and one-offs just by tapping

Most of the songs might not be the standard fare that you're used to hearing. Many are indie labels who have signed on with the app, so you might not be sure you will like their tunes. Fortunately, Jammer gives you a terrific length to preview each track.

Tap on a song from the store, and you get a full minute to explore the loops and one-offs before you make your purchase. When the 60 seconds is up, the music will fade away and you'll be prompted to buy the track if you like it.

If you don't want to buy the song, there's no pressure. Just tap "No thanks," and you'll go back to the store to look for more. For most tracks, you can even repeat your preview time an hour later.

It's great fun playing around with Jammer, and seeing what you can come up with. I only wish there was a way to record your creations to play for others or yourself later. Then again, I think we can all come up with ways to do that.

If you've never done any DJ work before, Jammer is a terrific introduction. The tutorial is short but comprehensive, the song selection in the store is terrific, and the app is easy to use. You'll be spinning for the party before you know it.
