Scott Forstall to Discuss the Original iPhone Launch on June 20

The People Behind Apple
June 15, 2017

Scott Forstall, who helped create iOS, is planning to discuss how the iPhone came to be. The interview with journalist John Markoff is being held on June 20 at the Computer History Museum in Mountain View, California.

Dubbed a “fireside chat,” Forstall’s interview will follow an appearance by three other members of the original iPhone developing team, including Nitin Ganatra, Scott Herz, and Hugo Fiennes.

As the museum explains:

During 2006, the year before the iPhone was introduced, it seemed that innovation in mobile devices was beginning to slip away from Silicon Valley. Wireless computing was advancing more quickly in Europe than it was in the United States. That all changed abruptly when Steve Jobs stepped onstage at Moscone Center in San Francisco and asserted he was introducing “three revolutionary products” in one package—the iPhone.

Putting Your Finger On It: Creating the iPhone” is scheduled for Tuesday, June 20 between 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. PDT. Registration is available online.

The interviews are part of iPhone 360, a year-long project spearheaded by the Computer History Museum’s Exponential Center. The project coincides with the 10th anniversary year of the iPhone launch in 2007.

Forstall served as Apple’s iOS chief until 2012 when he was ousted following the disastrous launch of Apple Maps in iOS 6. Since then, he’s remained quiet about his tenure at Apple.

In 2015, Forstall served as a co-producer of the Broadway musical “Fun Home,” which won five awards at the Tonys.
