Street Fighter IV: Champion Edition has hit the App Store. It’s been quite a while since developer Capcom has released anything on iOS, and this title was supposed to be released last week. However, a glitch in the game’s App Store submission meant Capcom had to begin all over again.
The Demise of Street Fighter has Been Arrested
It’s been about five years since the last Street Fighter game came onto the App Store. The game was tremendously popular, and previous mobile entries were also quite successful. You would have thought Capcom would update them and release new games over the past half-decade, but that hasn’t happened.
In fact, the Street Fighter II Collection hasn’t been updated since 2011. The original Street Fighter IV was last updated in 2014, and the notes say it may not work on devices updated to iOS 8 or later. That’s pretty bad for a paid app that was so incredibly popular.
The new version is out now, though, so let’s see what it brings us.
The Latest Chapter in Street Fighting
Street Fighter IV: Champion Edition brings support for larger screens, like the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus. The game also adds in three new fighters, and there are six more planned for future updates.
What’s really good about this latest edition in the Street Fighter franchise is that it finally includes support for Made For iPhone (MFi) controllers.
What hasn’t changed is the foundation of the game itself. It looks like an old-school Street Fighter game, without any updated graphics other than optimization for larger screens.
No, I don’t necessarily say that like it’s a bad thing. It has a definite throwback feel to it, so if you enjoyed Street Fighter as it was back in the day, you’ll welcome the fact that this game isn’t exactly the most impressive title on the App Store, graphically speaking.
