The Tech Media Minute: Facebook Goes After Apple's Memories, Devs Wait for iOS 10 Beta 2
Facebook has good news for iOS users waiting for a key iOS 10 feature. At the same time, Apple developers are waiting patiently for new software updates. Here’s a look at what’s happening in tech.

New iOS updates coming
Developers looking for new beta updates from Apple should be in luck as early as today. The second betas for iOS 8 and iOS 9 both arrived 15 days after the first ones were released in 2014 and 2015, respectively. The first beta versions for iOS 10, tvOS 10, watchOS 3, and macOS Sierra launched on Monday, June 13 — 15 days ago.
Facebook taking on iOS 10 feature
In iOS 10, Apple has added a new Photos app feature called Memories, which takes your favorite photos and creates beautiful movies. As a defensive measure, Facebook is now moving its similar movie-making Slideshow feature from its Moments app to its main iOS app.
As MacRumors rightly notes, “the move represents a direct attempt by the company to take on Apple’s movie-making feature in iOS 10, which is coming this fall, although both companies are actually playing catch-up to Google, which offered a similar feature last year as part of Google Photos Assistant.”
In the Facebook app, you’ll now be offered a slideshow whenever five photos or videos are taken in the last 24 hours. From there, you can “try it,” which allows you to edit the slideshow and add it to your News Feed.
Thunderbolt alternatives
Last week, Apple unexpectedly pulled its line of standalone Thunderbolt displays and offered no immediate alternatives.
