This app allows you to record audio and then play the recording backwards to find hidden messages. The technique of embedding messages into recordings with reverse speech is known as backwards masking. A backwards masked message sounds like noise or gibberish forwards, but is clearly audible when the recording is played in reverse. This technique was popularized by the Beatles who used backwards masking on their Revolver album. Use of backwards masking to embed messages into music has been somewhat controversial. Some believe that the technique is used to embed evil-subliminal messages into music. Others believe that reverse speech is a technique that can be used to gain insight into deep-subconscious inner thoughts of the speaker. Whatever you may believe, it is interesting to hear some of these recordings. Listed below are some of the most popular examples of reverse speech and backwards masking. There are many more listed within the app itself. Hear it for yourself!

Please note that the developer does not take any particular viewpoint on the backwards masking controversy nor does the developer advocate any of the messages in the listed songs. Most of the messages in the songs listed are either a parody on the backwards masking controversy or were imbedded in the song for artistic purposes. This app is merely for educational and entertainment purposes. The backwards masking technique is often discussed in Psychology classes under the topic of subliminal messages.

Song: Another One Bites the Dust
Artist: Queen
Message: "It's fun to ..." (download this app to hear the rest of the message)
Note: You can just listen to the part of the song that is available on iTunes without purchase. The message in this song is clearly discernable. This was the song demonstrated in my psychology class.

Song: Empty Spaces
Artist: Pink Floyd
Message: "Hello, hunters. Congratulations. You've just discovered the secret message. Please send your answer to Old Pink, care of the funny farm, Chalfont."

Song: Nature Trail to Hell
Artist: "Weird Al" Yankovic
Message: "Satan eats Cheez Whiz"
Note: Listen around 3:40 in the song. The message is a parody of the backmasking controversy.

Song: Michael
Artist: Franz Ferdinand
Message: "She's worried about you, call your mother."
