Week In Review - September 5th Edition
September 5, 2009
AT&T: The good and the bad
AT&T had a some announcements to make this week, good and bad. The good: They enabled their 850 MHz spectrum in more markets, Loopt signed a deal with them to allow always-on location services, MMS will be enabled on September 25th, and we got to hear from "Seth the Blogger Guy." The bad: 3G is still spotty in most markets, Loopt's location service will cost $3.99/month, MMS will be enabled on September 25th, and we had to hear from "Seth the Blogger Guy."
September 9th will rock
Only four days remain until the big September 9th "Rock and Roll" event, and we still have very little information about what is going to be announced. We are assuming there will be some iPod and iTunes announcements, but is that it? There have been rumors of other items, such as new Apple TVs, iTablets, and even mundane things like ready-made ringtones. But what could possibly more exciting than all of these rumors? The possibility of Steve Jobs presenting at an event for the first time since taking a leave of absence, of course. We are crossing our fingers.
Can we just get the car kit already?!
We have been fully enjoying our time with the TomTom iPhone app, and I am certain a review from us will be coming along one of these days; but just like everyone else, we are patiently waiting to see when the car kit will be released and what it will cost. Earlier in the week we found out that the peripheral made it through the FCC's approval process, but sadly, that apparently didn't mean much because TomTom announced that they would be missing their summer launch window and pushed the release back to October. The waiting game continues.
To approve or not to approve?
More App Store review process weirdness took place this week. Vonage submitted their own official iPhone app, and to our surprise it got approved rather quickly. Being approved doesn't mean being in the App Store, however. The company continues to beta test to ensure a great user experience before making it available. On the flip side, Chess Wars got rejected due to the use of shiny chat bubbles. Apparently shiny chat bubbles belong to Apple, although many other apps already use them.
New and noteworthy apps
In a single day, Smule's I Am T-Pain rocketed up the charts to claim second place in the App Store's top paid apps list. Rockstar announced they would be releasing two titles for our beloved platform: GTA: Chinatown Wars and Beaterator. Gameloft's highly anticipated FPS, Modern Combat: Sandstorm, was finally released. Konami's Mario Kart-like Krazy Kart Racers sped into the App Store. Pangea released the sequel to Enimgo, aptly titled Enigmo 2. EA released yet another classic board game app for the iPhone, and its name is Boggle. Wait, is Boggle technically even a board game?
