Midomi SoundHound Takes It To Shazam In v3.0
December 3, 2009
After Shazam Entertainment crippled the free version of Shazam and decided to start charging $4.99 for the premium version of the app, which still features ads mind you, many people decided to look elsewhere for their music identifying needs. Enter Midomi SoundHound v3.0, which is all spruced up and loaded with new features that will certainly make you wonder why you never gave it a second look in the first place.
Melodis Corporation's Midomi SoundHound is able to identify music playing from any speaker within seconds and it is even able to identify music that you physically hum. The main reason that the app has received less recognition, and some would argue unfairly, is that the app has almost always cost something, unlike Shazam. But with Midomi, you get what you pay for, and with its most recent update, that statement couldn't be any more true.
Midomi SoundHound v3.0 features a brand new design that makes identifying music much easier. The app also now features iPod integration, which not only allows you to play music from within the app, but it is also able to pull up and display information about the band and song currently playing. Midomi can also now display lyrics for your song, so you will never have to have another lyrics app installed on your iPhone again. The iPod integration ties into Midomi's music identifier as well, so if you identify a song that you already have installed on your device, Midomi will let you know and will allow you to play it instantly.
Midomi SoundHound v3.0 also features an even bigger song library, a new "What's Hot" tab that displays songs just grabbed by other users, the hottest and the most underplayed songs, and it still has no ads!
As always, Midomi SoundHound's one biggest drawback is its price since Melodis Corporation actually chose to raise the price from $4.99 to $6.99. But still, when you look at all of the features combined with the easy-to-use interface and compare them to Shazam Encore's, the extra $2.00 doesn't seem like as big of a deal.
