OpenFeint's PlayTime Brings iOS And Android Gamers Together

September 9, 2010
If you thought Apple's recently released Game Center would put an end to pre-existing iGaming networks, then think again. Because OpenFeint, for one, isn't going to go down without a fight. In fact, following Apple's special event (which took place last week), the company decided to announce a new service which it will be offering iDevice gamers in the very near future. Dubbed "PlayTime," this new feature will allow iOS and Android gamers to play against one another, and even talk through a built-in voice chat. iOS vs. Android isn't exactly a new concept. Other games have done it before, a key player being Skies of Glory which we told you about not long ago. However, a gaming network that offers iOS vs. Android gaming is something else, something worth getting excited about. Yet, once again this brings the question of third-party competition into the light. We all know developers either work with Apple, or against them - and that the latter option often includes a ban from the App Store. Indeed, many of us are watching apps such as Pro HDR (which offers improved high dynamic range photography, iOS 4.1-style), with baited breath, wondering whether Steve is going to kick them out. Could it be that Apple will put an end to PlayTime before the fun even begins? After all, Game Center is in its early days, and Apple will obviously want to make the service a huge success. I guess we'll just have to wait until the feature is actually launched. As TUAW reports, PlayTime is currently being tested by developers, and should be released soon. We'll be posting as soon as it is, so keep checking back for regular updates!
