Sega's Gunstar Heroes Joins Other Classic Ports In The App Store
November 23, 2010
Sega continues to bring 'old school' Genesis / Mega Drive titles to the App Store to ignite some fond memories and likely squeeze out a bit more profit. The latest port, Gunstar Heroes, is a side-scrolling shooter from the early '90s.
Join brothers Blue and Red, sister Yellow, and Professor White as they try to stop the Emperor, Colonel Red, and the evil robot Golden Silver from disabling the mystic gems of planet Gunstar 9. Go guns-blazing as you fight your way through numerous enemies, and take on the big boys in those always triumphant boss battle defeats.
Gunstar Heroes includes all of the familiar characters, plenty of weapons to wield, and local two-player multiplayer with a fellow iDevice owner using Bluetooth wireless connectivity.
Like the other Genesis / Mega Drive ports, Gunstar Heroes has the same quality graphics, audio, and gameplay as the original, except that the controls are overlaid on the screen as semi-transparent virtual buttons and D-Pad. Honestly, this approach has been both accepted for the nostalgia, and ridiculed for lack of effort on Sega's part.
Previous ports by Sega to iOS include games like Ecco the Dolphin, Space Harrier II, and Shining Force
Gunstar Heroes is compatible with iPhone and iPod touch running iOS 3.0 or later, and available in the App Store now at a price of $2.99 / €2.39 / £1.79 / AU$3.99.
