Easter Magic Without The Broken Eggs: Paint Easter Egg HD
Paint Easter Egg HD ($1.99) by Matej Ukmar (available for iPhone separately) is one of many Easter-themed apps hitting the App Store right now.
But, in a crowd of egg-decorating offerings, this one stands out for its simplicity, artistic style, and surprisingly robust features.
Paint Easter Egg HD lets you choose from an assortment of egg and background colors and then, like a painting app, lets you pick brushes and effects to create pleasing designs.
There are also stamps to decorate the eggs: not too many, not too cutesy, and really nice. They are scalable, and you pick the color.
The graphics are excellent; the egg has an authentic 3D appearance and realistic shadowing.
I love how paint or stencils I use in the shadowed areas are darker too. It’s a small detail, but those details are what make the end results look so beautiful.
This app has quite a number of sophisticated features, ones that often are overlooked in holiday apps.
It's easy to save your work to your device’s photo album from within the app and the resolution is great even as wallpaper. You can also save projects within the app to continue working on them later.
The undo button is another thoughtful feature. Experiment until you get just the egg you want without having to start over every time you change your mind.
There is even a background music track you can turn on and off. Developer Matej Ukmar clearly put a lot of time and thought into the app.
Paint Easter Egg HD is easy enough for even the youngest kids to create masterpieces, but because it feels so much like a painting app, it’s also for creative adults in the holiday spirit.
You can even seamlessly email your egg, or post it to Facebook. And, I liked the one I made so much while testing, I actually did!
I suppose there could be more color options and more stencils, but I happen to really like both the artistic look of those included, and the fact that they are pretty nondenominational.
You don’t need to celebrate Easter, to make eggs you will be proud to show off.
Paint Easter Egg HD may be a holiday offering, but I suspect it’s going to see updates throughout the year. This is too thoughtful an app to discard after a few weeks.
