Apple's mysterious North Carolina data center can now be viewed in mapping services such as Google Earth.
Previously, the mysterious data center had been one of Apple's most guarded secrets. In fact, if you attempted to check out the data center in Google Earth, "the satellite imagery stopped a few yards short of the construction site," according to Fortune:
If you asked Google Earth or Google Maps to show you the intersection of U.S. Route 321 and Startown Road — where the data center is located — the current satellite imagery stopped a few yards short of the construction site. West of Startown Road, there was, as recently as two weeks ago, nothing but woods and farmland and a bit of driveway that ended abruptly in the middle of a field. However, following Apple's announcement of iCloud (in a press release that hit the Web yesterday), the NC data center can now be viewed from space. You can check out the data center in Google Maps by clicking this link, or viewing the coordinates 35.588364, -81.26235.
