The New York Times Succumbs: Updates Apps, Adds Support For In-App Subscriptions

Today, The New York Times has updated its iPhone and iPad applications, adding support for Apple's in-app subscription policy. The update comes one day after Apple's rumored June 30 deadline.
There are a total of three subscriptions available: The first provides access to the smart phone app for $15/month, the second offers access to the website and the tablet application for $20/month, and the third offers "all digital access" (smart phone app, tablet app and access to the website), for $35/month.
Obviously, this is important: Up until today, The New York Times was one of the big names resisting Apple's in-app subscription policy. The policy was recently amended, allowing publishers to exist without support for in-app subscriptions, provided no alternate subscription method is linked to within the application. Recently, Hulu took this route by removing a link within its Hulu Plus app to its own website. The New York Times has chosen to support Apple's in-app subscription method. However, a variety of other publishers have yet to fall in line with Apple's vision.
The major two so far are Netflix and Amazon (the Kindle app). We'll keep you posted on the status of both, and in the meantime, let us know your thoughts in the comments.
