New Photo App Transforms Pixels Into Abstract Art
February 25, 2012
The App Store is certainly not lacking in apps that let you do all sorts of things to your photos. There is, of course, the extremely popular Instagram, with its lineup of filters and frames. Another example is Halftone, which makes photos look like vintage comic book panels. And then there's pxl., a new photography app that does something quite different from most of the photography apps we're used to.
Pxl. for iPhone and iPad lets you turn your ordinary photos into abstract compositions that, with the right touches and tweaks, could pass for actual works of contemporary art. The app comes with nine different styles that you could apply to your photos to make them look like abstract pictures. One of these styles transforms photos so that they look as though they were composed purely of solid dots. Another distorts photos in a way that results in rectangular shapes of different colors effectively forming the distinct figures in the original photo. Whichever style is used, you can adjust the resolution by pinching the image. An option to randomly produce an abstract image is also available by simply shaking your device. Watch the video below to see a demonstration of pxl.

Naturally, the resulting abstractions can be saved to your device's photo library, but sharing them via Facebook and Twitter is also supported. So, go ahead and experiment with pxl., and let your followers realize that there are other ways to have fun with photos beyond the artsy blotches and discolorations of Instagram. Pxl. is available in the App Store for an introductory price of $0.99.
