Facebook App Center Seeks To Boost Facebook-Connected App Installs

May 23, 2012
Facebook's App Center is aimed at being a — make that the — one-stop shop for apps that make use of Facebook Login. When it was announced a couple of weeks ago, one of the apparent benefits of the project that was highlighted by Facebook was its potential for "driving mobile installs." Today, the social network's development team has elaborated upon this supposed advantage of the upcoming social software hub. According to Facebook, as an iOS user, you can access App Center on the official Facebook iOS app as well as on Facebook's mobile site, m.facebook.com. Apps that have been approved for listing in App Center get their individual app detail pages, which you can freely browse through. If you click the install button on an app detail page, one of two possible courses of action is instigated. If the app is already installed on your device, the app is automatically opened and duly authorized. Otherwise, you're redirected to the app's description and install page in the App Store. A similar scenario takes place when you opt to browse App Center on your desktop, in which case each app detail page contains a "Send to Mobile" button. When you click this button, a Facebook notification is sent to your device. And when you approve this notification, you're taken to the App Store for installation of the app under consideration. This is all well and good, but the point of an app store (note the lowercase) solely for Facebook-connected apps seems moot. For one thing, a considerable number of users consider the necessity of logging in to apps via Facebook as a possible dealbreaker. I guess we'll just have to wait and see for sure if App Center delivers on its promise of, among others, boosting the mobility of mobile apps. Source: Facebook Developer Blog Via: The Verge
