While still an iPhone 4S exclusive, Siri has been getting a lot of attention lately, as its the main focus of these recent TV spots. With Siri being such a strong selling point for the iPhone 4S, it was a bit disappointing that everyone's favorite personal assistant didn't land on the new iPad. However, Dictation, one of the new features introduced with Siri, did make it to the new iPad. Dictation may also have a spot on the the upcoming OS X Mountain Lion, according to 9to5Mac.
Hidden within a resources file of the latest build of Safari in the newest seed of OS X Mountain Lion, evidence shows that Dictation on the Mac may be a very real thing in the near future.
Unlike the virtual keyboards on the iPhone 4S and third generation iPad, physical Mac keyboards lack a dedicated microphone button. The image above indicates that simultaneously pressing both command keys will activate Dictation and the "new in Mountain Lion" note couldn't be any clearer.
Of course, we won't know anything until Apple confirms it, but maybe we'll learn more at next month's WWDC. With the line between iOS and OS X continuing to blur, I think it's safe to assume that Dictation will land on Mac. After all, why not? While it isn't any more practical than typing, it's features like these that continue to wow customers. Fortunately for Apple, Dictation works very well (in my experience), so it should be well received if it does end up in OS X Mountain Lion.
What do you think? It looks like Apple is aiming to unify iOS and OS X, do you think Dictation would provide any real benefits on the Mac?
