New iPad To Invade Shores Of Guam And Philippines On May 29
May 26, 2012
Nearly three months after its launch, whether the new iPad is still really new is open to question. But to the respective markets of two particular countries, the latest generation of Apple's bestselling tablet will indeed be new come Tuesday. That's because the so-called new iPad is going to be officially released in Guam and the Philippines on May 29.
Previously, Apple issued press releases announcing the launch of the new iPad in the U.S., South Korea, and 20 other countries in the last couple of months. Perhaps because only so few countries are concerned this time, Apple merely updated the iPad availability page on its Web site to reflect the planned release of the device in the two aforementioned Asia-Pacific countries.
The new iPad will be available in Guam through MiTech International, apparently the only Apple reseller in the island. But here in my native Philippines, which has been home to a thriving gray market for the device, customers will be able to get the new iPad from the Philippine Apple online store, a handful of authorized resellers, and local carrier Globe Telecom. Globe will offer the 4G LTE variant of the device as a tie-in product to its existing nomadic broadband plans, which include an unlimited data plan costing around $25 per month.
As noted in the same Web page indicating the availability of the new iPad in Asian countries, Indonesia and China are yet to be given official release dates. Perhaps Apple is still in the process of clinching deals with its partners in the former and of settling trademark disputes in the latter, where, interestingly, the new iPad is largely manufactured.
