Escape From The Dangerous Toy Factory With Night Flight

August 31, 2012

Night Flight ($0.99) by Jupija is an arcade style game of escape. Fly through the night in a toy airplane, collecting coins and avoiding missiles. Freedom is just behind the metal door.

Players control a fluffy purple teddy bear as he flies through the toy factory, looking for escape. To control the plane, tap the left side of the screen to ascend and tap the right side to descend. The plane is very hard to control so be prepared for lots of loop-the-loop action.

The goal is to collect as many coins as possible, grab the remote control, and fly out of the room as fast as you can. Players earn stars for how well they complete each task. When maneuvering through the course, collecting coins becomes more difficult as the levels progress. Heat-seeking missiles will launch at you, magnetic mines will pull you toward them, and buzz saw-wielding machines will try to stop you from grabbing what you need.

The plane is actually too hard to control. Once you get to level 10, there are a lot of obstacles getting in your way as you try to keep airborne. It makes the game more challenging, but tends to annoy the player. I gave up in frustration after level 12.

Although this is an entertaining and challenging game, there is a major problem with the program. I first downloaded it on my fourth-generation iPod touch running iOS 5.1.1 and it crash constantly. Not only that, but it lagged during gameplay, which probably contributed to my frustration. Then, I downloaded it on my iPhone 3GS running the same iOS and it was worse. Each level took so long to load that I thought my phone froze up.

I downloaded it on my third-generation iPad and it worked flawlessly. The game is not optimized for the larger iPad screen. However, I was able to actually play it for more than two levels. I have to assume that the game works better on newer devices. I can’t guarantee that it will not crash on the iPhone 4 or 4S, but I have a feeling it will run better on those models.

I wish I could give this game a good rating. It is very fun, even if the difficulty in the second phase is almost too much to handle. With more patience, I could have gotten a lot further. The real problem lies in the fact that it crashed on two out of three of my iOS devices. The game is unpolished and needs more work before I can recommend it.
