Sing! Is A Fun Way To Do Karaoke, If You’re Willing To Pay For It

August 8, 2012
If you’re too embarrassed to try to belt out the latest and greatest hits at the local karaoke bar, the new Sing! app from developer Smule allows you to sing with friends from all around the world. Here’s a quick video on how the app works. Click here if you can’t see the video. As far as music selection, the free app is a mixed bag. Users can join in a duet or group song with anyone for free at anytime. But if you want to start signing a song from popular artists like Carly Rae Jepsen, Justin Bieber, Lady Gaga, Adele, Maroon 5, or Carrie Underwood, be prepared for an in-app purchase. Most of the 130 songs are $0.99 each. To its credit, the app does have a few free songs like “America the Beautiful” and “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star.” But that’s not exactly what I’d want to belt out with my friends. And if you’re not all that enthralled about singing with your friends, Smule does say the app contains voice enhancement technology and voice filters to spice up a performance. Even so, I bravely tried signing one of the free songs and couldn’t exactly hear any “enhancements.” But maybe that’s because I’m a really bad singer, and no amount of enhancement could help. Users can sing songs by themselves, or join up with other users in duets or groups songs. The app allows users to keep track of their friends and comment on performances. Sing! is designed for the iPhone and iPod touch and is compatible with the iPad. It can be downloaded in the App Store. Smule is well known for its music-related apps. Another of the developer’s recent titles, AutoRap, received the Honorable Mention award in our recent App of the Week selection.
