The Next Time You Buy A Car, Think About Apple
August 30, 2012
We already knew that Apple has dominated the technology marketplace for the past decade. But who knew that Cupertino has also influenced the color of cars? According to Motoramic, they have.
For much of the past decade, silver had been the most popular exterior car color in the United States. However, that has changed, according to Sandy McGill, BMW Designworks’ lead designer in color, materials, and finish. The new top-selling color for cars is now white and this is largely because of that little company in Cupertino, Calif.
Says McGill:
Prior to Apple, white was associated with things like refrigerators or the tiles in your bathroom. Apple made white valuable. In a move that started with the iMac G4 "Sunflower" in 2002, and has continued with iOS devices, Apple has often used white as the primary color for their products. However, using white hasn't always been easy. Although the iPhone 3G and 3GS did come in white versions, Apple had a hard time getting the color just right for the iPhone 4. In June 2010, Apple was supposed to unveil a white iPhone alongside a black version. Unfortunately, it took until April 2011 for Apple and Steve Jobs to get the color right and release the snowy handset. By the time the iPhone 4S arrived last October, Apple had perfected the color and released their latest iPhone in black and white models. The iPad 2 (first released in March 2011) and the new iPad also came in white. Think now: Was your last car purchase influenced by Apple? Source: Motoramic
