Apple Overtakes Samsung As Top Smartphone Maker In US In New comScore Survey

February 7, 2013
A week ago, a survey from Strategy Analytics found that, for the last quarter of 2012, Apple had the highest mobile phone market share in the U.S. Now, a new survey from comScore is suggesting the same. The marketing data and analytics company had been been surveying more than 300,000 smartphone and non-smartphone users for its quarterly reports. But for some reason, comScore opted to survey only smartphone users for the just-ended holiday quarter. Were non-smartphones included in the survey, Apple's number would naturally be lower. But in the smartphone-only survey recently released by comScore, Apple emerged as the top smartphone manufacturer in the U.S. During the three months ending in December, which happened to be the three months immediately following the release of the iPhone 5, there were 125.9 million smartphone users in the U.S. Of these, 36.3 percent owned Apple's iPhone, resulting in a two percent increase from Apple's share in September. Samsung ranked second with 21 percent market share, while HTC ranked third with 10.2 percent share. Motorola and LG rounded up the top five with shares of 9.1 percent and 7.1 percent, respectively. The U.S. smartphone platform market was also surveyed by comScore. In this case, Apple's iOS managed to rank number two only, with 36.3 percent market share. Unsurprisingly, Google's Android, with its plethora of supported smartphones from various manufacturers, ranked first with 53.4 percent share. Blackberry ranked third with 6.4 percent share, followed by Microsoft with 2.9 percent and Symbian with 0.6 percent. Given Apple's excellent performance in both surveys, could the sky really be falling in Cupertino? Source: comScore Via: The Next Web
