Another 'iPhone Killer'? Facebook Set To Unveil 'New Home On Android' Next Week
March 29, 2013
Facebook has just issued an invitation to an April 4 event where the social networking giant is set to call on the press to "Come See Our New Home on Android." At long last, could this be the long-rumored Facebook Phone that's almost certainly going to compete with Apple's iPhone?
Well, according to TechCrunch's sources, "it will be a modified version of the Android operating system with deep native Facebook functionality on the home screen that may live on an HTC handset."
A partnership between Facebook and HTC was first reported back in 2011, when the former struck a deal with the latter to make a smartphone codenamed "Buffy." Buffy may have already evolved into the "altered Android OS running on HTC" project that Facebook is supposedly poised to launch at its upcoming event.
TechCrunch has more on the project:
Rumors we’ve heard say that the project could actually be called “Facebook Home”, and its hallmark would be a heavily Facebook-ified mobile phone home screen. This could include Facebook news feed stories and data splayed out right on the home screen, along with easy access to Facebook apps.If the project is indeed called Facebook Home, then it makes perfect sense for Facebook to come up with the teaser, "Come See Our New Home on Android." I dare say the wordplay even reminds me of Apple's invitation for the Retina iPad event from last year, with which it teased, "We have something you really have to see. And touch." But could the launch of the so-called Facebook Home be as momentous as the launch of Apple's Retina iPad aka "The New iPad"? We'll just have to wait until April 4 and see. And probably touch.
