Meet Tumblr Play, The Old Tumblr iOS App's Secret Twitter #Music-Like Feature

April 27, 2013
Last week, Twitter finally launched its much-anticipated social music app simply called Twitter #Music. But did you know that an early version of the official Tumblr app for iOS had a feature similar to Twitter #Music's core feature? The official Tumblr app for iOS as we know it today actually started as the third-party app Tumblrette, which ended up being acquired by Tumblr. According to Tumblrette developer Jeff Rock, the classic app had a hidden feature called Tumble Play, which, like Twitter #Music, was designed for music discovery. Accessible only through a series of special actions, Tumblr Play pulls all of the audio posts from your Tumblr Dashboard and plays them back automatically. "Sure, you ended up with the occasional comedy skit in between an eclectic mix of pop and indie music," says Rock in a blog post, "but that was awesome. That was Tumblr. It was a sonic representation of your Dashboard and it kind of kicked ass." Rock adds that Tumblr Play was never publicly released because of Tumblr's "fear" of running into legal troubles arising from its operation of an unlicensed streaming platform. You can read more about Tumblr Play on Jeff Rock's blog, which includes the steps on how to unlock the feature in Tumblrette. Apparently, it involved having to enter the name of Rock's pet Boston terrier when prompted for a password. Awww ... Via: The Next Web
