Nest Learning Thermostat Mobile Companion App Gets Summer Update
May 1, 2013
Nest Mobile, the official companion app of the Nest Learning Thermostat, has received an update in anticipation of the high temperatures this coming summer.
The update is actually an offshoot of the "new summer software" that has just been issued to the popular programmable and self-learning thermostat. As such, it includes new features that work in conjunction with the new features of the thermostat itself.
First, there's Advanced Fan Control. This lets you schedule the fan to turn on daily, for a few minutes every hour, or on a set timer.
There's also Sunblock, which senses when Nest is in direct sunlight and automatically adjusts the thermostat to read and set the correct temperature. And then there's Cool to Dry, which detects when humidity reaches potentially hazardous levels and automatically turns on the air conditioner if necessary. You can view Sunblock and Cool to Dry in Nest Mobile's Energy History.
Also in Energy History, you can now see the effect of Seasonal Savings and Rush Hour Rewards, for which you can now also get messages. Available to customers of Nest's partner energy providers, these two features are part of Nest's energy-saving Auto-Tune technology.

Furthermore, you can now get messages in the app for Filter Reminders. You can now also remove a thermostat and add or remove a home in the app.
Last but not least, the latest update to Nest Mobile makes changing the temperature with the app more natural, as though you were turning the ring on Nest itself. Now, you can just tap and hold the tick on the large thermostat icon to adjust the thermostat. This serves as an alternative to tapping the upper or lower half of the icon.
Compatible with iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad running iOS 5.0 or later, the new version of Nest Mobile is available now in the App Store for free.
Nest is the namesake flagship product of Nest Labs, which was cofounded by Tony Fadell. Fadell is the former Senior Vice President of the iPod Division at Apple. Not coincidentally, Nest is available from Apple as well as other retailers.
