DigiTimes Claims Next-Gen iPad mini Production Could Be Postponed

While most of us have been hoping that Apple will launch a new iPad mini at some point in fall, one recent report from DigiTimes claims that the Cupertino, Calif. company could see production of its next-generation small-sized tablet postponed until November.
The website explains:
Volume production of a new-generation 9.7-inch iPad will begin in July-August with shipments in the third quarter estimated at five million units. Meanwhile, a second-generation iPad mini may see its volume production postponed from September to November, according to Taiwan-based supply chain makers.Though the website corroborates with recent reports to suggest that the next-generation 9.7-inch iPad will feature a lighter, thinner design, according to DigiTimes there are two potential reasons for the iPad mini's predicted delay. First, while Apple CEO Tim Cook said back in February that his company isn't worried about the iPad mini "cannibalizing" the sales of its 9.7-inch iPad, DigiTimes proposes that Apple will delay the launch of the second-generation iPad mini in an attempt to suppress this effect. With a design change reportedly in the cards, it is thought that a revamped 9.7-inch iPad will be Apple's "focus" in 2013, and that the product's earlier launch could persuade customers to purchase the larger sized tablet rather than its less expensive counterpart. Second, however, the website also acknowledges that such a delay could instead be due to issues with the iPad mini supply chain. Either way, DigiTimes has a "hit-or-miss" track record when it comes to Apple-based predictions. It would indeed be a surprising move for Apple to hold two separate events in the second half of the year out of choice, especially since the company is now in the rhythm of holding one single event for its next-generation iDevices in fall. Of course, while supply chain issues could take such a decision out of Apple's hands, until we hear further news concerning iPad mini delays this isn't something worth worrying about.
