Bigger And Better: Google Maps 2.0 Brings iPad Support, Explore Section And More

July 17, 2013
Following their release on Android last week, several significant features have now made their way to the Google Maps app on iOS. And these features include enhanced navigation, a new Explore section, and — finally — tablet optimization. That's right: released last December as an app designed for iPhone and iPod touch, Google Maps is now finally optimized for iPad as well. As a result, you can now enjoy a more fluid and smoother Google Maps experience on a bigger canvas. Google Maps has also been updated to offer enhanced navigation, including live traffic updates and incident reports. It now also offers indoor maps with walking directions for malls, transit stations, airports, and other public complexes. In addition, the app now has a Explore section aimed at helping you discover popular local places for dining, shopping, entertainment, and accommodations. This new section is notably enhanced with Zagat ratings and Google Offers. All of these new features and improvements are packed in Google Maps' new update, which brings the app to version 2.0.
Compatible with iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad running iOS 6.0 or later, Google Maps 2.0 is available now in the App Store for free. I've long preferred Google Maps over Apple Maps on my iPhone. I rarely consult and use online maps on my iPad, though. But if and when I find the need to do so, I know exactly which Maps app developed by a certain large tech company to open.
