This Week In Accessories: Olloclip Telephoto Lens, Braven 850 And More

July 12, 2013
Welcome back to our weekly look at the wonderful world of iOS device accessories. After a slow start to the month, thanks to the Fourth of July holiday in the United States, companies definitely had more new accessory announcements this week. These four new accessories span the gamut for iOS device owners.

Olloclip Telephoto Lens

Filling out its line of popular clip-on lenses for the iPhone, Olloclip has just announced a new 2x telephoto option. Along with zooming in on photo subjects, the lens will also come with a circular polarizing filter that can be used with the company’s other products. The lens will retail for $99.99 and be available at Apple Retail Stores later this month. It will arrive at Best Buy in August. There will be one version that is designed to work with just the iPhone 5 and another model that is for the iPhone 4S/4 and iPod touch. Our own Bryan M. Wolfe recently reviewed the Olloclip three-in-one lens for the iPhone 5 late last year.

Braven 850

Braven has expanded its line of speakers with the new 850. Designed to take on Jawbone’s Big Jambox head-on, the speaker measures 10-inches long, 4-inches tall,  and sports a unibody design. Made with aircraft-grade aluminum, the speaker uses a cone driver and dual passive radiators to provide a room-filling audio experience. Along with being able to charge other mobile devices with a built-in USB port, the 850 sports digitally enhanced sound based on DTS Audio’s SRS WOW technology. The enhanced sound can be turned on and off. The larger size also allows the speaker to go for up to 20 hours of play time on a single charge. Two speakers can also be daisy-chained to provide left and right channel audio. The speaker retails for $299.99 and can be purchased through Braven’s site now. It will ship starting Monday. I’ve previously reviewed Braven’s smaller 625S speaker, and was a big fan of the sound quality and design. It looks like both of those qualities have carried over to the larger version.

Tanks from SwitchEasy

Well-known for its line of iOS device cases, SwitchEasy has just jumped into a new market by introducing an interesting, high-capacity portable battery option. Featuring a unique design, Tanks contains a massive 6,000 mAH battery, which is four times the capacity of the iPhone 5’s cell. A large white LED gauge shows how much capacity is left in the battery. Available in either black or white, Tanks is $69.99 and can be ordered through Switch Easy now.

DockBoss5 from CableJive

Thanks to the new DockBoss5, music lovers with older iPhone docking stations don’t have to worry about their equipment becoming obsolete. As the name implies, the DockBoss5 turns older docking stations into a universal charger with audio output. The dockBoss5 retails for $29.95 and can be ordered directly from CableJive. It comes with an audio cable and USB to micro-USB cable. You will have to supply your own Lightning cord, unfortunately. But unlike either of Apple’s 30-pin to Lightning adapters, with CableJive’s solution, you can actually hold a device in your hand while listening to music.
