In Addition To Search, Khan Academy Now Enhanced With Offline Viewing For iPhone

August 2, 2013
The latest update to Khan Academy wants to teach you a couple of new tricks. They're quite simple, sure, but they're really useful if you want to make the most out of the official iOS app of the popular nonprofit educational website created by educator Salman Khan. The Khan Academy app was released on iOS in March last year, but only for iPad. It wasn't optimized for iPhone and iPod touch until last November. And even then, it came with some omissions for the smaller iDevices. Last month, the app was updated to remedy one of those omissions, adding support for logging in and tracking video watching on iPhone and iPod touch. And now, the app has been updated to rectify what is arguably the most notable omission, which is the lack of support for offline viewing on iPhone and iPod touch. That's right: the new Khan Academy app update finally adds the ability to download videos for viewing later, even when offline, on iPhone and iPod touch. As Khan Academy puts it, "Now, with a bit of preparation, you can watch a video on "Normal Force in an Elevator" *while in an elevator*. Whoa." Just long-tap on any video to download it onto your device. What's that? You wish to download all of the videos in an entire category? No problem: just long-press on any topic to download all of the videos it contains. Now that downloading videos for offline viewing has been added to Khan Academy for iPhone and iPod touch, navigating videos through subtitles is the only key feature that remains exclusive to Khan Academy for iPad. But for both of the iPhone/iPod touch and iPad editions of Khan Academy, the update introduces a new search functionality that lets you pull down to search for a video from anywhere in the app. Compatible with iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad running iOS 6.0 or later, the new version of Khan Academy is available now in the App Store for free.
