Shelf Control: eHighlighter For iOS Brings E-Book Benefits To Print Sources
August 19, 2013
For this week's edition of Shelf Control, we're going to take a closer look at eHighlighter on the occasion of its first ever major update.
Released nearly a year ago, eHighlighter is an app for iPhone and iPod touch that allows you to easily transcribe highlights from print books onto electronic form:
Writing out an entire quote can take minutes. Typing quotes in to your computer is a good way to organize, but adds even more time. With eHighlighter, you can transcribe quotes in just seconds. You can then review your highlights and notes in one organized, searchable place. In eHighlighter, you can add a source book by barcode scanning, online search, or manual entry. Note that by scanning the barcode or searching by title or author, you get to instantly add citation information for a book. What's more, you can manage and export citations in proper MLA, APA, or Chicago style format for research and other purposes. Now, to add highlights from a book with eHighlighter, just take a snapshot of a page, specify the beginning and the end of a highlight, and let the app's OCR magic automatically transcribe the highlight for you. The app also lets you organize your information with notes and tags as well as sort and search highlights by tag or keyword. In addition, it allows you to share your notes with other eHighlighter users or export them via email, Dropbox, or Evernote. As mentioned, eHighlighter has just received its first major update. Most notably, the update revamps the app's interface so that it now looks streamlined and primed for iOS 7, complete with its long-overdue iPhone 5 optimization. The update also integrates the latest SDKs for Evernote and Dropbox. Optimized for iPhone and iPod touch running iOS 6.1 or later, the new version of eHighlighter is available now in the App Store as a free update or as a new $1.99 download.
