Smartphones Finally Overtake Feature Phones Worldwide As Android Dominates

For the first time, smartphones have overtaken feature phones in terms of worldwide sales. At the same time, Apple’s share of the overall smartphone market has fallen 4 percent, according to Gartner.
During the second quarter of 2013, worldwide mobile phone sales to end users totaled 435 million units, or an increase year over year of 3.6 percent. Of those, 51.8 percent were smartphones.
For the quarter, Samsung saw its market share reach 31.7 percent, up from 29.7 percent in the second quarter of 2012. Apple’s share dropped to 14.2 percent. Last year, Cupertino’s share of the market stood at 18.8 percent.
The Android operating system continued to dominate as it controlled 79 percent of the market. Apple’s iOS was far behind at 14.2 percent, followed by Microsoft Windows Phone at 3.3 percent.
Of all mobile phone sales, Samsung was also the leader with 24.7 percent. Nokia followed with 14.0 percent. Apple was in third place with 7.3 percent.
