Super! Netflix Now Supports HD And AirPlay Streaming On iOS 7
October 3, 2013
A week ago, Emmy-winning online content provider Netflix made its "Super HD" video streams available to all members who own supported devices. Now, those devices already include iOS devices, thanks to the new 5.0 update to the official Netflix app for iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad.
Specifically, 1080p HD streaming is now supported by the Netflix app so long as it's on a device running iOS 7. Also, so long as the Internet connection allows it. As noted by Netflix, Super HD requires an Internet connection speed of at least 5Mbps. But for the highest available video quality, it requires a minimum speed of 7Mbps.
The latest update to the Netflix app also adds support for AirPlay streaming on iOS 7. This is essentially an alternative to using the official Netflix app on Apple TV. As such, it requires disabling AirPlay mirroring for it to work.
Also including playback optimizations and stability improvements, Netflix 5.0 is available now in the App Store for free.
In related news, Hulu Plus, the official iOS app of the popular Hulu on-demand video streaming service, was updated yesterday to support Google Chromecast "casting" on iPad.
Netflix has been supporting Chromecast on iOS since the digital media streaming dongle's launch last July.
