Looking For A Last-Minute Holiday Gift? Give The Gift Of Unlimited E-Books With Oyster
December 24, 2013
Yesterday, we suggested sending electronic gift cards from Apple, Amazon, and several other retailers as electronic stocking stuffers of sorts. But if those types of gift cards are not really your type nor are they likely to really please your intended recipients, you're probably still on the lookout for last-minute holiday gift ideas.
Well, if at least one of your intended recipients happen to (a) enjoy reading and (b) have an iOS device, we suggest giving Oyster subscriptions instead.
By giving Oyster subscriptions, you're practically giving more than 100,000 e-books, which is the number of books available from Oyster.
Dubbed the "Netflix for books," Oyster offers unlimited access to its huge catalog of e-books, including popular fiction and nonfiction titles, for just $9.95 per month. These e-books are available for reading via the official Oyster app for iOS 7 devices.
To get started with giving an Oyster subscription, go to oysterbooks.com/gifts and log in if you're already an Oyster member or continue as a guest. Then, choose the duration of the subscription you'd like to give, which can be as short as one month ($9.95) or as long as 24 months ($238.80).
After choosing your gift, you can then choose how you'd like to deliver it. You can set a date and have Oyster email it for you on that day, or you can print it out with a unique redemption code and hand-deliver it the old-fashioned (and perhaps more thoughtful) way.
Upon receipt of your gift, your friend, relative, or significant other just has to visit oysterbooks.com/gifts/redeem and follow the instructions therein to redeem it. Of course, the recipient of your gift also has to download the Oyster app to enjoy his or her Oyster subscription.
The Oyster app is available in the App Store for free. It's compatible with iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad running iOS 7.0 or later.
Released early last September for iPhone and iPod touch, the app was updated in mid-October with iPad support along with other major enhancements. For more information on Oyster, check out our original review of the app and of the service itself here on AppAdvice.
Note that Oyster is currently available in the U.S. only.
