Mobile payment company Square is teaming up with Product (RED) for a special edition of its credit card reader.
For every SQUA(RED) Reader ordered, 97.25 percent of the $10 donation will go to the Global Fund to fight AIDS. The donation could provide more than 24 days of life-saving medicine for someone living with the disease.
When a credit card is swiped with the reader, customers will be able to donate to the cause directly from their emailed receipts.
The reader can be purchased now from Square’s site for $10.
Apple is also a major supporter of Product (RED). Most recently, a special promotion with Apple, Bank of America, and the charity raised more than $3 million. For every download of the U2 single “Invisible” on iTunes, $1 was donated to the program.
And on World AIDS Day on Dec. 1, 2013, Apple showed its support by rendering some Apple Store logos in the signature color. Apple also has a number of Product (RED) products at its online store, including Smart Covers, cases, and iPods.
Jony Ive, Apple’s senior vice president of design, also helped design a number of one-of-a-kind items for a Product (RED) auction last year in New York City. A red Mac Pro sold for more than $1.6 million.
