Apple Celebrates Indie Games In New 'Indie Game Showcase' App Store Feature
March 21, 2014
Apple has just debuted a new section in the App Store called "Indie Game Showcase."
As its name suggests, the new section highlights games developed by independent development studios. Specifically, in this presumably regular feature, Apple shines the spotlight on a popular game and the indie team behind it. In addition, it promotes the team's other games along with the team's favorite games from other developers:
Often made up of just a few dedicated members, independent studios prove that what really matters is the size of your dream. In each Indie Game Showcase, we celebrate a popular game and its creative team, highlighting the developer’s titles along with their favorite games from other studios. In Apple's first Indie Game Showcase, the spotlight is on the intriguing text-based thriller puzzle Device 6 and its developer, Simogo. Simogo's other acclaimed games include Year Walk, Bumpy Road, Beat Sneak Bandit, and Kosmo Spin. As for Simogo's favorite games from other studios, they include Bad Hotel, Critter Panic!, and Groove Coaster, among others. As rightly noted by MacStories, the launch of this new App Store feature "comes at the end of the Game Developers Conference, which saw an increased interest in indie productions by larger companies." The Indie Game Showcase is featured by Apple in the banner carousel on the App Store homepage. Likewise featured is a new section for Apple's "10 Incredible Indie Games," which includes Device 6, Badland, The Room Two, and Threes!.
