Apple Highlights 'Best New Game Updates' In New App Store Featured Section
June 27, 2014
With today's App Store refresh, Apple has introduced a new home page section that features the "Best New Game Updates" in its popular app distribution platform.
As its title suggests, the "Best New Game Updates" section highlights recently updated games of note — as opposed to recently released ones, which are featured in "Best New Games."
Previously, games with notable updates were included in "Best New Games."
Apparently, Apple has seen it fit to add a separate section for recently updated games on account of the unusually large number of titles that have been released this week. Whether "Best New Game Updates" turns out to be just a one-off or remains in the App Store home page even in weeks with normal numbers of new releases is yet to be seen.
On the non-gaming side of things, Apple still combines both new releases and recent updates in the App Store's "Best New Apps" section.
For what it's worth, one-off or not, the "Best New Game Updates" makes it easier to discover games that have just been significantly updated, games that may otherwise be lost amid the flood of new game releases.
Apple has certainly been improving the discoverability of content in the App Store. Just a couple of weeks ago, it launched a new "Browse by Category" section to enable users to browse through apps under a specific classification or genre.
And in iOS 8, which is scheduled for launch this fall, Apple is set to take discoverability further with a new Explore feature, app bundles, previews, and trending and related searches in the App Store.
