New data from comScore indicates that Apple has held onto its lead as the No. 1 smartphone manufacturer in the United States, but adds in a recently published report that Samsung is gaining.
During the three-month period examined by comScore (ending April 2014), Apple actually lost 0.2 percentage points in terms of its share of U.S. smartphone subscribers.
Despite this, however, Cupertino ended the period with an impressive share of 41.4 percent, and this nevertheless placed it ahead of Samsung (which held 27.7 percent), LG (which held 6.5 percent), Motorola (which held 6.3 percent), and HTC (which held 5.3 percent).
Out of the five smartphone manufacturers examined in comScore's study, Samsung was the only OEM to have increased its share of the U.S. market: it did this by one whole percentage point, and as such the South Korean company is gaining -- albeit slowly -- on Apple.
In terms of smartphone operating system market share, Android is still out in front and held onto a share of 52.5 percent at the end of the period (gaining a 0.8 percent share). Apple's iOS, on the other hand, held 41.4 percent of the market as of April 2014, and saw a point change of -0.2 percent.
BlackBerry, Microsoft, and Symbian continued to account for a far smaller share of the U.S. smartphone OS market, however.
Apple might have failed to gain market share in both respects during the period, but as Kantar Worldpanel recently suggested, it seems a large portion of the U.S. market is actually holding out for Cupertino's anticipated iPhone 6.
