Updated: Apple To Launch A New $199 16GB iPod touch Offering iSight Camera, Color Options

June 26, 2014
Update: The new 16GB iPod touch is available now and is exactly what we expected.

The portable media player market might be on the decline, but Apple isn’t giving up on its market-leading iPod touch yet. According to a new report, Cupertino is planning on releasing a new $199 16GB iPod touch offering a similar feature set to the higher-priced 32GB and 64GB models.

This means we can expect the new 16GB iPod touch to feature an iSight camera and multiple color options, MacRumors explains.

Citing information provided by an unnamed source, the website notes that the incoming product would essentially be “a 16GB version of the current 32/64GB iPod touch, coming in six different colors with a rear camera and a lower price tag of $199.”

Apple indeed released its 32GB and 64GB iPod touch in October 2012, charging customers $299 before releasing a $229 version with a limited feature set.

The iSight camera and color options were both axed from this less expensive model, and its internal storage was reduced to 16GB.

Curiously, iGen.fr has published a similar report noting that the new iPod touch is set to launch next Tuesday. Like MacRumors, iGen.fr notes that the new product constitutes “a single model only, and not a revision of the entire iPod touch line.”

It’ll be disappointing if Apple doesn’t bring a more advanced mobile processor to its iPod touch, but the same Apple A5 chip could remain in order for Cupertino to keep the cost down. At the same time, we’re also hearing that the iSight camera will continue to be the same 5MP unit Apple uses in its 32GB and 64GB iPod touch models.

We’ll keep you updated with further information on the product as we receive it.
