Apple Unveils A Less Expensive iMac, But Still No Retina Display Model
June 18, 2014
Apple has revealed a new entry-level iMac starting at $1,099. The 21.5-inch model comes with a 1.4GHZ dual-core Intel i5 processor, a 500GB hard drive, 8GB of memory, and an Intel HD 500 Graphics chip. Customers can add a 1TB Fusion Drive for $250.
All iMac models include next generation 802.11ac Wi-Fi, and two Thunderbolt ports and four USB 3.0 ports for excellent expandability and support for high-performance peripherals.
With the update, Apple has once again elected not to release an iMac with a Retina display. As Joe White reported, the news comes despite the fact that an iMac with Retina display computer is explicitly referenced in OS X 10.10 Yosemite.
As we explained earlier this month, “according to the developer preview of OS X 10.10 Yosemite, Cupertino’s iMac desktop computer could be the next Apple device to receive an ultra-high resolution display.”
Apple's new entry-level iMac is available today through Apple’s online store and retail outlets. It shows an availability of "within 24 hours."
On Tuesday, Apple released OS X 10.10 Yosemite Update 1.0 alongside iOS 8 beta 2 to developers. Both operating system updates are expected to arrive for the public this fall.
