Snapchat's location-based Our Story feature officially goes 'Live' in latest update

August 30, 2014

Snapchat‘s Our Story feature has just officially gone “Live.”

Snapchat has just received a new update, which, according to its release notes, brings nothing more than “improved video chat” and “bug fixes and improvements.” But as noted by the Snapchat team in a new blog post, the update also sees the introduction of a new Live section for Our Story, which allows users at the same location to contribute “snaps” to the same story.

Our Story was debuted at Insomniac’s Electric Daisy Carnival (EDC) last June (see video below), and was later used during Rio, Outside Lands, and Lollapalooza — resulting in more than 350 hours of shared snaps.

And now, more live events are being covered with Our Story and featured in the new Live section under Recent Updates in Snapchat. “That’s where you’ll be able to experience Stories contributed by the Snapchat community at all sorts of events,” Snapchat notes. “It’s a great way to check out what’s happening around the world.”

Optimized for iPhone and iPod touch, Snapchat is available on the App Store for free.

It’s likely that Snapchat plans to use the new Live section as part of its move toward providing an advertising platform for brands.

Last month, Snapchat introduced another location-based feature in the form of a set of “geofilters” for special locations in Los Angeles and New York.
