Sony rolls out Album of the Day iOS app to promote music purchases via daily deals
Amid the growing popularity of music streaming services such as Spotify, Rdio, and even its very own Music Unlimited, Sony is pushing for actual music purchases with its Album of the Day app for iOS.
Developed by Sony Music Entertainment Germany, Album of the Day was soft-launched in Germany last March. But now, it has gone international with its official launch in the U.S., the U.K., Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and Ireland.
As its name suggests, Album of the Day features a different album every day. But more than that, it offers every featured album at up to 70 percent discount for 24 hours, with a direct link to purchase the album at special pricing on the iTunes Store. The app also supports push notifications to alert users of new deals daily.
The deals, by the way, are for albums of popular artists under the Sony label, including such music heavyweights as the pictured Bruce Springsteen and Michael Jackson, whose second posthumous album, Xscape, is the deal of the day.
Sporting a simple yet elegant interface, Album of the Day also allows potential purchasers to get more information about the offers, preview song clips, share offers with friends, and browse past offers.
