Apple's App Store tops 85 billion downloads with year-on-year revenue up by 36 percent
Apple has just announced that the App Store has already topped 85 billion downloads.
As noted by TechCrunch, that’s up from 60 billion around a year ago.
Launched in July 2008, the App Store now hosts 1.3 million apps, as announced by Apple at its special media event for the iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, the Apple Watch, and Apple Pay last month.
According to Apple CEO Tim Cook, App Store revenue also saw a year-on-year increase of 36 percent.
And with Apple Pay now available with iOS 8.1, App Store revenue is expected to see further growth. In addition to enabling contactless payments at NFC-enabled brick-and-mortar stores, Apple Pay works with Touch ID to allow one-tap payments within apps, e.g. for in-app subscriptions and micro-transactions, on iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPad Air 2, and iPad mini 3.
The App Store’s 85 billion download milestone was announced by Apple at its Q4 FY2014 financial results conference call earlier today, where it also announced its record-breaking sales for the iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 Plus.
